Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral which is extremely beneficial for our teeth. It is naturally found in water however the quantities in it may not be sufficient hence dentists recommend fluoridated toothpastes other than fluoridated water. Fluoride helps reduce cavities.
One myth which we have busted in another blog about fluoride is that fluoride is unsafe for kids. This is completely untrue. In fact fluorine supplements given to kids as young as 6 months help protect and strengthen their teeth for their lifetimes.
According to CDC fluoridated water usage can reduce tooth decay by 25%. There are also fluoride treatments available which can be administered only by qualified dentists and dental hygienists which include application of high on centration fluoride in the form of gels, varnish, solutions or foams to help strengthen teeth and reduce cavities.
This treatment can also be administered to children. Fluoride treatment is completely safe and used by dentists the world over to help prevent tooth decay in children.
But as a parent it is natural to be concerned about whether this treatment is needed and its side effects if any. You can check with your pediatrician or your child’s dentist if the child needs a fluoride treatment.
The treatment is simple, painless and quick. It involves putting the fluoride on the teeth with the help of a brush and allowing it to harden which takes anywhere between 4 to 5 minutes. It is a topical treatment and not at all invasive. While some children naturally can become anxious during the treatment however this is not due to any pain or discomfort.
The child can drink or eat anything (nothing too hot) within 4 to 6 hours of the treatment and may be advised to brush and floss only the next day.
The only side effect with some of these products is slight discoloration of teeth.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that there is enough research evidence available to suggest that topical application of fluoride treatment is children is effective in reducing caries in children with who are at risk of developing caries.
The treatment is recommended to be under taken every 6 months in case of children with moderate risk of caries and every 3 to 6 months in case of children with high risk.
Healthy gums and teeth are important for your child’s overall health. Hence it is essential to take care of them.
