Oral Hygiene

Did you know that as per CDC more than 1 in 4 adults in United States have untreated tooth decay and 46% of all adults over 30 show signs of gum disease?

You may be surprised but all of this is preventable with good oral hygiene. So, what is oral hygiene? To put it simply oral hygiene is keeping your mouth clean and free from infections and diseases.

Cleaning teeth means removing dental plaque and tartar from teeth to prevent cavities, gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing your teeth twice a day (before breakfast and after dinner) helps remove this plaque. But the toothbrush cannot reach the areas between the teeth and this is where flossing comes into the picture. You must floss every time you brush.

While most people think these 2 steps are sufficient for oral care, that is not true. You must rinse your mouth with water and use mouthwash to avoid bad breath. Mouth wash helps reduce the bacteria in your mouth.

You should also avoid tobacco products, sweets and limit alcoholic drinks. The acids produced by bacteria in your mouth to digest the sugars remove the tooth enamel (the shiny protective outer layer) which leads to cavities. If left untreated the cavities can become very painful and also lead to loss of the tooth.

Another thing that most adults skip is visiting the dentist. Visit your dentist regularly.

Firstly no one likes yellow teeth and bad breath. But more importantly not taking proper care could lead to cavities, gum diseases and potential tooth loss which has an impact on our overall health.
