According to ADA (American Dental Association) over 47.2% of adults over the age of 30 suffer from chronic periodontitis (advanced gum disease). The reason many people do not realize that they have a gum disease is because it is painless. Although there are tell tale signs like –
- Red or swollen gums
- Bleeding gums
- Persistent bad breath
but many a times people miss these. Some studies as per ADA indicate that severe gum disease may be associated with other health conditions like diabetes and stroke.
Hence it is essential that we take of our gums along with our teeth. Here are some ways you can ensure that you have healthy gums –
- Brush at least twice a day with a soft bristled brush (powered or manual). This will help remove food and plaque between your teeth and gums.
- Floss every day. It cleans those hard to get to places which are unreachable by a brush.
- Use ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste and drink water with fluoride. Fluoride is nature’s way of fighting cavities.
- Quit smoking – Smoking not only increases the problems with gum disease but also slows down healing after dental treatments.
- Eat a healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids like nuts, fatty fish, fruits, legumes and vegetables. (As per Harvard Health Publishing there is evidence that people with a diet with high omega-3 fatty acids have reduced risk of periodontal disease.)
- Visit your dentist regularly – A dentist is a professional who can identify a gum disease before you can and earlier detection can help in faster recovery and ensure that the disease does not aggravate.
